Facts on play in Oakville
The variety of outdoor, indoor and just plain interesting things to do in Oakville is quite astonishing. Here are some of them.
Fitness, swimming and more?
Our Town has five recreation centres that have a lot more than swimming and fitness. The "Y" on Rebecca has all this and more still. And very competitive swimming happens at Oak, part of Oakville Aquatics.
Skiing?
Glen Eden is less than 30 minutes from downtown Oakville in Milton, on the north slope of Rattlesnake Point. Fine ski and boarding programs, and not a bad place to make a few turns.
Hiking and More?
There are a huge variety of hiking trails in Halton. Many are in our eight conservation areas that also offer other things, like swimming, climbing, a maple sugar shack and much more. Oakville even has a Provincial Park with overnight camping, at Bronte Creek Provincial Park. Its Trillium Trail is spectacular in spring. And there's a ninth secret one with no signs and not on any website (but here). Ask me about it.
Culture, or maybe just reading?
The Oakville Centre for the Performing Arts offers a hugely eclectic variety of entertainment from plays to symphony to rock to.... Here's the program.
The Oakville Public Library system is a rare and valuable resource for more than just books.
Golf, Racquets, Boating?
Established in 1921, the Oakville Golf Club is on the east bank of the Sixteen about a kilometre downriver from Glen Abbey. It’s one of Canada's finest nine hole golf clubs, and tougher than its better known, maybe soon to be closing, rival, with a slope rating from the blue tees of 131 compared with 123 up the creek. A beautiful clubhouse, Chef Craig's excellent cuisine and its no tee time policy make it truly unique.
Established even earlier, in 1907, the Oakville Club is also on the east bank of the Sixteen, south of Lakeshore on the harbour. Tennis, squash, badminton, swimming, fitness and sailing are its major activities, but it is also the only al fresco dining establishment right on the water in all of Oakville - a glorious setting. And Dockmaster Larry can get you into any boat club around the Lake for the weekend or more.
The Burloak Canoe Club is the home of two Olympic gold medal winners. Oakville Yacht Squadron and Bronte Harbour Yacht Club regularly produce Olympic sailors but no medals so far. No Olympics yet for the Oakville Power Boat Club but it has a year round clubhouse in a lovely setting and with Romero behind the bar it is a very relaxed place to be.
